The new UK ETA System
Starting in 2025, the UK is introducing the Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) system, of significant importance for those travelling internationally for business. This new digital travel permit applies to visitors from visa-free countries, including European Union citizens, and impacts short-term business visits. From April 2, 2025, EU nationals will need an ETA. If your business involves frequent trips to the UK, understanding this new system is important for smooth travels.
ā€
Here’s a breakdown of what this means for your business, and how you can stay ahead of the changes.
What is the ETA, and why does this matter?
The ETA is not a visa but a digital travel permission for short stays. It’s simple to apply for, costs Ā£10, and remains valid for two years, allowing multiple entries for stays of up to six months per visit. The 180-day (6-month) rule refers to the maximum duration of stay per visit, not per year. For businesses, this is more than a formality. It introduces an additional administrative step for your international sales team, export managers, or directors traveling to the UK for meetings, events, or market exploration. While it’s straightforward, it’s an extra step that needs to be done in advance or avoid delays.
Key challenges and recommendations for Businesses
Prepare your trips in advance and organise your personal ETA in March 2025. ETA decisions typically take three working days but can take longer if additional checks are needed. Late applications could delay business trips. Even if employees only have a layover in the UK, they will still need an ETA, adding preparation for connecting flights. In other words if you are traveling to the US and have a stopover in London, you need to organise your ETA. Ensure employees are aware of the process and requirements, including the use of the UK ETA app for faster results.

Expanding internationally is more than just logistics and market analysis. It’s about understanding people—their way of working, communicating, and making decisions. Local business culture is one of the most underestimated keys to success when entering a new market.

We’ve spent time in the field—from the UK to Germany, Spain, and the Netherlands—learning how to build trust and operate effectively in each country. Here’s what we’ve learned and how Boost Business helps companies navigate these nuances.

ā€

Germany: Structure, pride & practicality

Germany is one of the most attractive European markets, but also one of the most structured. Here’s what you should know:

  • Trust takes time. Germans value reliability and consistency. Don't rush deals—focus on building long-term relationships.
  • Hierarchy exists but respect is universal. Titles matter, but so does input from every team member.
  • Efficiency is everything. Meetings are purposeful, and being on time is non-negotiable.
  • Analysis-driven. Business moves forward only after a plan is thoroughly reviewed.
  • Private life matters. People don’t define themselves by job titles but by deeper personal values.

Our experience in Hamburg confirmed these cultural traits—locals were warm, direct, and open-minded. We connected easily by respecting their ways of working and being present on the ground.

ā€

Spain: Collaboration & community

When working in Spain, the rules are more social and people-driven:

  • Personal connection is key. Expect small talk before business and multiple meetings before decisions.
  • Family comes first. Respecting values and personal time builds trust.
  • Hierarchies are loose. Teams often work through collaboration instead of top-down structures.
  • Locals are proud of their roots. They often identify with their specific region, not just the country.

From coffee chats in Barcelona to business events in Madrid, we've seen that knowing how people connect locally is crucial.

ā€

UK: Personality, manners & relationships

Having lived and worked in the UK, we’ve grown to love its quirks and cultural richness:

  • Everyone is themselves. Style, background, opinions—people are embraced for who they are.
  • Business is social. A deal might start with coffee and be signed over a pint.
  • Politeness matters. Manners are deeply rooted in British culture, and first impressions count.
  • Trust builds slowly. English professionals want to see proven results and consistent behavior.
  • Hierarchies matter in business. Skipping a step in the chain of command can cost you the deal.

One thing that stands out: business relationships are personal. It’s not just what you know, but who you know—and how well they know you.

ā€

The Netherlands: Directness & structure

The Dutch love efficiency and directness:

  • Meetings start on time and go straight to the point.
  • People are confident, open, and often critical—but in a constructive way.
  • There’s a strong sense of equality. Everyone gets a voice.
  • Though small in size, the Netherlands is highly international and entrepreneurial.

The Dutch are proud of their roots and eager to share their way of doing things. They also tend to be project-driven and quick decision-makers—ideal when you're looking to scale quickly.

Why local insight makes the difference

Each country has its own rhythm. Business moves at different paces. Relationships are built differently. What works in the Netherlands won’t necessarily work in Germany or Spain.

That’s why at Boost Business, we offer more than strategy—we provide local commercial professionals who know the culture, speak the language, and act as your eyes, ears, and voice in the market.

Whether it’s helping you get listed at retail, forming local partnerships, managing logistics, or adjusting your market entry strategy—we make internationalisation smoother, faster, and more successful.
